Del Mar, the smallest
city on the Pacific is on the beach just northwest of San Diego, boasts
the Del Mar Fairgrounds, world famous attraction for events and the
county’s racetrack. Bing Crosby, original owner, once frequented the
fairgrounds to watch the horses, among other Hollywood celebrities.
Just
over 4,500 residents, Del Mar has expanded its real estate up from the
bluffs above the surf and into the hills. An abundance of trees lends a
woodsy feel. The “beach colony” is a flat area located just north of the
centre of Del Mar. It claims some of the most expensive direct beach
tract homes in Southern California. The historic center is a very
exclusive community with one main thoroughfare, Camino Del Mar.
Most of the Del Mar
homes were built between the 40’s and the 80’s, and many have ocean
views. Development laws prevent obstructing existing views and there are
no drive-thru’s allowed. Del Mar is a tight-knit community that wants to
maintain its small-town charm.
Surrounding
areas included lagoons on either side of Camino Del Mar and state parks
to the east and south, emphasizing the natural environment of this
lovely community.
Access to I-5 runs east
of the beaches and is highly congested during commute hours. A less
stressful alternative is a commuter rail service that runs north and
south along the coast with stops in all major coast cities and towns.
Restaurants, shops, and beach activities keep busy visitors and
residents alike.
Each summer sets off
Del Mar’s annual fair that lasts 3 weeks and attracts over a million
participants. The beautiful beaches make this spot an ideal place to
live, if you can afford it!
